Library

PRL Library is a treasure house of knowledge showcasing best collection of books, periodicals and other non-book material from all corners of the world in Astronomy, Geoscience, Planetary science, Space science, Solar Physics and theoretical physics spread over three campuses - Main Campus, Thaltej Campus and USO Campus of PRL.

Library is the backbone of the institute and has multifaceted approach to managing print, digital and audio-visual material in a seamless manner. It plays a vital role in knowledge capacity building and research skills development at PRL.

The Library homepage acts like a window through which it is possible to access the digital content subscribed by PRL as well as open access content. Primarily, it gives online links to 80% of the journals subscribed by the library. In addition, access is made available to AGU Digital Library, Geological Society of America archive, Physical Review Online Archive (PROLA), ‘Science’ archive and PQDT - Proquest Dissertation and Theses database. Through Antariksh Gyan – ISRO Libraries Consortium, the IEEE Digital Library, SPIE Digital Library, AIAA Journals, Nature Journals, Springer Journals, Wiley Journals and Elsevier journals are made accessible. Since 2016-17, the Library has started carrying out similarity check (plagiarism check) for scientists and students using the Ithenticate tool as it is becoming mandatory for students to carry out the similarity / originality check before submitting the thesis and most of the journals carry out the originality check before accepting the article for publishing. Library also assists the students in writing research papers and theses by providing ‘Grammarly’ tool to their desktops/laptops. Remote access facility is also available for scientists to work from home or when they are travelling.

The PRL Library maintains an institutional repository which consists of journal articles published by the PRL authors from 1990 to present and is also linked through the Library homepage. More than 4000 articles by PRL authors are now part of the repository. Greenstone Digital Library Software is used to maintain the institutional repository. All the PRL theses from 1952 onwards are now available online full text for PRL users. All the Technical Notes since 1977, published by PRL have been digitized and are available online full text for PRL users. More than 550 e-books can be accessed through the library homepage.
