Two Ribbon Flares

Some flares are observed in the form of two bright strands. These strands or ribbons, seen in the H-alpha light, may slowly separate and drift apart. This feature indicates that more extended regions of magnetic field configuration are becoming involved in the energy conversion process. Usually the flare strands appear around a dark filament separating opposite polarity regions. In many instances, before the beginning of the flare, filament activation is observed.
