Flares normally avoid intense magnetic fields of sunspot umbrae, through some large flares may expand towards the sunspots and cover the umbrae partly, and sometimes even completely. However, there is also a special and rare class of 'umbral' flares, showing development of intense brightnings confined within the umbral regions.
