Udaipur - the lake city



Often referred to as the 'Venice of the East', the lake city of Udaipur is known as the centre for performing arts and crafts. The famous Lake Palace, located bang in the middle of Lake Pichola is easily one of the most beautiful sights of Udaipur. Udaipur is also home to Jaisamand Lake, the largest artificial lake in Asia. The beautiful City Palace and Sajjan Garh (Monsoon Palace) add to the architectural beauty and grandeur of the city. The city is also known for its profusion of zinc and copper mines. Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) as a part of Physical Research Laboratory is on an island in the Fateh Sagar Lake.

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as a new capital of the Mewar kingdom. It is located in the fertile, circular Girwa Valley to the southwest of Nagda, which was the first capital of Mewar. Until Udaipur was built, the capital of Mewar was Ahar, a flourishing trade town. Transport


Udaipur is well connected to the major cities of India by land, rail and air.

Air


Dabok airport, a.k.a. Maharana Pratap Airport, is small domestic airport situated in a satellite town about 20 kilometers from Udaipur. Daily flights connect Udaipur with Jaipur, Mumbai and Delhi. Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo and Spice Jet are operational at present.

Rail


Udaipur City has direct trains with broad-gauge network to most of the major cities in Rajasthan and the rest of India such as Jaipur, Kota, Chittorgarh, Ajmer, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Ujjain, Mumbai, Surat, Baroda, Bhopal, and Gwalior and a metergauge network to Ahmedabad. The popular trains connecting Udaipur with Delhi are Mewar Express and Chetak Express.

Road


The city lies on the Golden Quadrilateral National Highway (NH-8), midway between Delhi and Mumbai, located around 700 kilometers from either city. The East West Corridor which starts from Porbandar and ends at Silchar passes and is intersecting the Golden Quadrilateral and shares the common space from Udaipur to Chittorgarh. The roads in this part of the country are paved and fit for private vehicles. One can either drive from Jaipur (~6 hrs via Chittorgarh), from Kota (3 hrs), from Ahmedabad (4.5 hrs) or Surat (9 hrs), or take a Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) bus from Bikaner House, India Gate in Delhi Rajasthan roadways.

Local transport


Unmetered taxis, Private Taxi, Radio taxi, auto rickshaws, and regular city bus services are available in the city. Uber and Ola cab services are available .



Climate during meet


At the end part of the monsoon expeced to have pleasent weather. However there can be few showers. This period welcomes with lushing greenery and enchanting lakes around the city.
