After the Pragyan rover was deployed on the Moon, the APXS observations began. APXS carried out 23 scientific observations along the path of the rover at the locations as shown in the image below (background is image of the region obtained with Chandrayaan-2 OHRC). At each of these locations, APXS instrument was deployed and the X-ray spectra of the lunar surface was acquired. Additionally, spectra of calibration plate was taken before and after each lunar observation, which were used to monitor the instrument performance over time.
In addition to these 23, there were other APXS operations meant for engineering verification. A summary of all 30 APXS operations on the Moon is given in the table below. Each rover stop was designated with a mobility ID by the Chandrayaan-3 mission and we have also assigned an observation ID for each APXS observation. Thus, APXS observations are identified with the APXS observation ID (sequence from 00 to 29) and the mobility ID defining the rover stop location. In the image above, the APXS observation IDs for some of the locations are shown for reference.
