National Science Day 2017

 

NSD at USO:

As part of the national science day celebration, a science program was organized at the Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) to promote science among school children who are at an early stage of their career. The program was organized on 23rd February, 2017 with a special focus on the contemporary theme of "Science and technology for specially abled persons". The number of participating schools was nine of which seven were English medium and two were Hindi medium. The highlights of the program were,

1. An overall introduction to the scientific activities of USO and its history by Prof. Nandita Srivastava
2. Overview of Science as a career by Prof. Ashok Ambastha
3. Exposure of the participating students to hands on experiments organized by the postdoctoral and doctoral students at USO
4. Oral presentation by the participating students on the theme "Science and technology for specially abled persons"

The language for the oral presentation was either English or Hindi. To further motivate the students, the oral presentations were conducted in a competitive format. The Maharana Mewar Public School, Govt. Girl's Senior Secondary Residency School, and St. Anthony Senior Secondary School came at first, second and third positions respectively. The program concluded with distribution of participation certificate, consolation prizes and the prizes for the top three positions.

 

USO participation in NSD at PRL:

Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO) participated actively in the National Science Day (NSD) celebrations at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) on 25 February 2017. During the open house exhibition, a live stream of images of sun recorded by the Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST) installed at the island observatory at Udaipur was displayed at PRL, Ahmedabad. These images which were taken in G-band showed the sunspots.

 

Around eight volunteers from USO, actively contributed to explain the scientific activities carried out at USO to the general public, school and college students. Among the exhibits, USO showcased a model of the island observatory and also a poster with the description of the MAST telescope, GONG instrument. The poster also highlighted the basic research topics that are being addressed using the facilities at USO.
