UDAIPUR SOLAR OBSERVATORY (USO)

OUTREACH PROGRAMME

Night Sky Watch Programme at Udaipur Solar Observatory

Two night sky-watch events were organized by the Outreach Committee at the Udaipur Solar Observatory using the on-campus 14-inch telescope. The Post-docs and PhD students showed the night-sky to the visitors with the telescope.

The first event was conducted for the USO staff and their family members on 22nd January 2018. The session began around 7 pm and continued till 9.30 pm. The session was attended by around 30-40 people which involved observations of the Moon and various Messier objects like Andromeda galaxy, double stars, Orion nebula, globular- and open-clusters.

The second event was conducted as part of the National Science Day celebration on 16th February, 2018. This was attended by around 20-30 students and their accompanying teachers. The students were first given a brief overview of the night sky, highlighting the important night-sky objects followed by a hands-on session on using astronomy kits. The night-sky objects shown were similar to the first event. The session was well received with lots of discussions and interesting questions from the students.

To popularize astronomy, a night-sky-watch session— using the 14 inch telescope at USO was organized for the participants in the evening session, which was enthusiastically received.
