Solar flares, generally, tend to occure in active regions near sunspots where magnetic fields are large and complex. However, flares are known to occur sometimes at places with no discernible spots. These are termed as 'spotless' flares.Usually such flares occur around both sides of an erupting filament on the form of two ribbons, drifting apart during the declining phase of the flare.
