ION PROBE LABORATORY
PHYSICAL RESEArCH LABORATORY
NAVRANGPURA, AHMEDABAD - 380009
Areas of Research :
- Origin and early evolution of the solar system
- Now-extinct short-lived nuclides in the early solar system: Solar-stellar relationship
- Planetary Sciences and Exploration; Indian Mission to Moon: Chandrayaan-1
- Formation and Evolution of solar system objects such as Moon, Mars and Asteroids
- Cosmic ray interactions with solar system matter
- Geochronology and Archean evolution of the Indian shield
Most of the above studies are based on isotopic analysis of relevant planetary and terrestrial samples by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (High Mass Resolution Ion Microprobe) technique using a Cameca ims-4f ion probe.
Future research will include, in addition to the above, studies of interplanetary dust, interstellar grains present in meteorites and cometary particles returned by STARDUST mission using a Nano-SIMS. Plans are on for conducting laboratory experiments on condensation and grain growth in simulated early solar system (solar nebula) environment.
Areas of Research :
- Presolar grains, Nucleosynthesis & Stellar evolution
- Meteorites & Early evolution of Solar system
- Galactic Chemical Evolution
