Ozone and its precursors in different environments:
Ozone,
near the earths surface and in the troposphere, has gained
importance due to its role in the global warming, atmospheric
chemistry, and its deleterious effects on plants and human
health. A programme was initiated in 1991 to make measurements of
surface ozone and its precursors like CO, NOX
and hydrocarbons at different locations in India representing
different environments such as the urban, rural, marine and free
troposphere. Surface ozone level at Ahmedabad is found to have
increased from 1954-55 to 1991-93 by about 0.5%/year on an
average. Ozone production efficiency is found to be lower over
the Indian region as compared to US and European regions.
