Major Responsibilities & Missions
- 1 HEX · Chandrayaan-1: System Engineer for the High Energy X-ray Spectrometer (20–300 keV, CZT detector) flown on India's first lunar mission. Developed in collaboration with URSC Bangalore; delivered June 2008.
- 2 XSM · Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter (Deputy Project Director): Overall responsibility for the Solar X-ray Monitor (1–15 keV, 175 eV at 5.9 keV). Novel design capable of handling X-class flare count rates. Generated extensive high-quality publications including microflare discoveries with sensitivity two orders of magnitude better than GOES.
- 3 APXS · Chandrayaan-2/3: Overall responsibility for the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer using Silicon Drift Detector (0.8–26 keV, 135 eV resolution at 5.9 keV). Aims at measuring elemental composition of lunar soil. Post-landing elemental composition measurements at ~30 locations along the rover traverse covering ~100 m near the lunar south pole. Consistent performance throughout the lunar day. Results published in Nature.
- 4 ASPEX · Aditya-L1 (Deputy Project Director): Overall responsibility for the Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment comprising SWIS (100 eV–20 keV, MCP detectors) and STEPS (20 keV–5 MeV, Si PIN + Scintillators). Both subsystems delivered late 2022; STEPS powered ON 10 Sept. 2023 and SWIS on 2 Nov. 2023; performing satisfactorily at L1 halo orbit.
- 5 Venus Orbiter Mission (Instrument PI): Proposed and leading two instruments — Venus Radiation Environment Monitor (VeRad, 20 keV–100 MeV, Si PIN stack) and Venus Solar Soft X-ray Spectrometer (VS3, 1–80 keV, SDD + CdTe). First such measurements planned around Venus.
- 6 ISRO-JAXA LUPEX Mission: Part of the team proposing XRS (1–30 keV, SDD), GRS (30 keV–3 MeV, CeBr₃) and APS (1–10 MeV, Si PIN) for surface/subsurface elemental composition studies near permanently shadowed lunar regions.
- 7 Technology Firsts: First in India to develop an SDD-based X-ray spectrometer with ~135 eV resolution at 5.9 keV for space; novel in-orbit leakage-current measurement technique (no additional hardware); miniaturised hybrid front-end electronics; 5-channel SDD array with simultaneous readout (<150 eV at 5.9 keV).
- 8 Other Leadership Roles: Associate Project Director for DISHA Aeronomy mission payloads; Engineering Lead for PRATHIMA on LUPEX Rover and other upcoming instruments in various mission being developed at PRL.
