Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), a premier institution of the Department of Space, Government of India, conducts basic research in areas of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Solar Physics, Earth, Planetary & Atmospheric Sciences and Theoretical Physics. The Laboratory has several world-class experimental and computing facilities spread over its campuses: at Navrangpura and Thaltej, Ahmedabad; Infrared Observatory at Mt. Abu; and Solar Observatory at Udaipur. Details on the research programmes are available on the website (www.prl.res.in).

The Summer Internship Programme for post-graduate students and college teachers at Physical Research Laboratory will be held from May 16 to July 15, 2011. Those interested in a research career in Physics after M. Sc. may avail opportunity to spend about six to eight weeks of summer vacations at PRL. The participants will work on a specific project in association with a faculty member of the institute and can participate in other scientific activities such as seminars, colloquia etc. This will be a nice opportunity for interacting with the scientists at the PRL.

Eligibility and Subjects: Students in 1st year M. Sc. / 4th year integrated M. Sc. (7th Sem.) / 1st year M.Sc. (Tech.) / 1st year M.Tech. (Science / Applied Sciences) in Physics /Geology /Geophysics /Optics /Atmospheric Sciences / Applied Physics / Laser Science & Technology can apply.

Teachers in Physics/Geology/Geophysics/Optics/Atmospheric Sciences/Applied Physics/Laser Science & Technology, teaching at M.Sc. / B.Sc. level with interest in pursuing research in any of the areas of research available at PRL, are also invited to apply.

Please note that the students studying in any branch of engineering are not eligible to apply in this programme. For such students a separate training programme is available.

The participants will work on projects in association with a faculty member in any of the four campuses. The details of the program are as under,

(i) For Students : Duration - 2 months, Min. 6 weeks (May 16 - July 15, 2011)

Summer Fellowship & Facilities: ` 5500/- pm on pro rata (minimum six weeks duration), return II-class sleeper train fare by the shortest route and hostel accommodation with canteen facilities on a nominal charge.

Essential Qualifications: Consistent academic record with first Division or equivalent grade.

(ii) For Teachers : Duration - Up to 2 months (minimum 1 month), during May 16-July 15, 2011, with prior arrangement about the duration and the timing of visit to PRL.

Summer Fellowship & Facilities: ` 9000/- pm on pro-rata basis, return II-AC train fare by the shortest route and guest house / hostel accommodation with canteen facilities on a nominal charge.

Essential Qualification: About 5 years teaching experience, demonstrated interest in research as evident by research publications / research projects. Desirable Qualifications: Ph.D. degree.

2. Applications will be received on-line only (for students).

3. Upon registration, applicants will be provided with an on-line Registration Number, which should be carefully preserved for future reference. E-mail ID of the applicant will have to be given in the application compulsorily.

4. For Teachers the application should also contain one page write up about details of current research, courses taught and a list of research publications along with full CV.

5. Selected candidates will be informed via email by third week of April 2011, tentatively.

6. The on-line application for PG students has to be invariably followed-up with a `recommendation letter' from one or two faculty members familiar with student. Mark sheets / certificates are not needed.
